~ Land of the Many-Breasted Moon Serpent Mother ~

After spending much time with the Ancient Stones of Albion, this Summer we followed the pull of the Dragon Leys across the waters to Brittany. Here, on this Northwestern peninsula of France sits the highest concentration of Megalithic structures on Earth, and perhaps the largest ritual landscape of the ancient world.

Carnac is of course, famous for its iconic and enigmatic ‘Stone Rows’ which alone are comprised of over 3,000 Menhirs. It is my feeling, that much like the Her sister sites of Cornwall/Kernow and Anglesey/Mona, the Stone Rows of Carnac are a mirror of the Metatonic/Eclipse Cycles of the Moon Goddess, which were so important to our Ancestresses.

Everywhere we look in Brittany, we see place names associated with the words for ‘Sea’ and ‘Goddess.’ It is clear the peoples of this land were deeply connected to movements of the Moon and the Ocean. As we with all sacred places, there is much mythology around lost lands and sunken islands that surround Brittany.

Yet, Carnac is much more than simply Stone Rows, the land is littered with Dolmens, Tumulus and standing stones of many different varieties and styles. It is clear that these sites were in use for thousands of years, with each new generation shaping them in its own way to reflect the changing cosmic cycles.

In Brittany we see clear evidence of monuments being moved or even completely rebuilt to realign with the skies as the Great Ages of the Processional cycle unfolded.

~ The Serpent Mother Speaks ~

I tend not to do much prior research before visiting a new site, I prefer to let the Stones, the Land and the Ancestors speak. The first Dolmen we entered in Brittany was ‘La Maison des Feins’ which now sits in the heart of a magical woodland.

I felt inspired to take an offering of Snake Skin, instead of my usual herbs or petals as we approached the site. After spending some time communing and asking permission to enter, I journeyed into the long tunnel of the moss-covered Barrow. Sunlight shone down through the large Capstones, creating the pattern of a large snake on the Earth. I felt as if I was crawling into the belly of a giant serpent. Sitting in the dark chamber I felt Her speak. She hissed into my ear…..

“There is an ancient Serpent Goddess which lives in the land here. She is older than all things.  She is the one who devours the Moon.”

To me, as a Goddess Astrologer, this was a clear reference to the old teachings around Lunar Eclipses cycles, which have always been associated with Ouroboros/Serpentine/Draconic imagery, as have ley lines.

As I received this message, the land beneath me seemed to move a writhe, the Stones of the old Temple seemed scaled and many-eyed. I felt honoured, humbled and slightly terrified of the Goddess of this land. I thought of the legends of Melusine, the Great Twin Tailed Mer-Queen of the ancient Bloodlines of this region.

Climbing out of the Long Barrow, I noticed that carved into the Stones at the rear were notched images of breasts, which I would learn are a feature at many of the Womb/Tombs of Brittany.

As we journeyed on through the land, we visited many other Chambers and ‘Passage Graves’ that have Stones etched with clear depictions of Anthropomorphic figures with many Breasts, surrounded by Serpent or Scale shaped images.

One Menhir in particular stands out, sitting in the Landscape of ‘Kermario’ ~ The land of the Dead,

yet much older than the Stone Rows themselves is a Long Stone, engraved with 3 Serpents. The Stone sits above a small Chamber, with the Snake images hidden beneath the earth, indicating this space as a potential initiation or oracle chamber.

Brittany is a place where the layers of time collide, and the veil between worlds is thin. The Serpentine frequency of alchemy, transformation and rebirth echo through the stones, a reminder of a time when the Moon Goddess was honoured in all of Her phases, from Dark and Oracular to Full and Birthing.
